Home Memories

 Skene Street School from 1878.

The original building is on left, it was all built by the School Board for a total cost of £7075 including purchase of site. At the end of the 1880s the wing immediately on right was added, while the final addition housing the assembly hall on extreme right came in 1963-1964. Below, the school from behind showing the conversion of Jack’s Brae (in foreground) into a pleasant grassy slope with seats for the public.

MR WALKER

Mr Walker is an ex pupil of Gilcomstoun school. After the second World War he and his family emigrated to Australia. He came to us to talk about the school and how it was back in the 1940’s. There has been a lot of changes since he was there He explained about teachers and his head teacher that suddenly dropped dead in his office. He was thought to have had a heart attack.
